ST. JOSEPH, Mo. -- For Tyreek Hill, each burst of speed and every impressive catch offer another chance to change the questions he faces. The Kansas City Chiefs rookie will never escape the sordid details of his past, but hes here now and ready to earn a spot on the roster.Hill continues to impress on the field during the early portions of training camp, including a highlight-reel catch he made getting past NFL defensive rookie of the year Marcus Peters on Tuesday. The reasons for success on the field cant be ignored.Hes fast, Peters said. But its fun. Thats the competition we need. Thats that explosiveness were going to need from him in the season. The Chiefs selected Hill in the fifth round of the draft. A year ago, Hill had pleaded guilty to abusing and strangling his girlfriend and was kicked off the Oklahoma State football team over the 2014 incident. He spent last season at West Alabama, where he juggled school and football with counseling sessions and other court-mandated service work. His probation isnt scheduled to end until 2018.The Chiefs faced some backlash from fans over the pick. For his part, Hill insists interactions with fans so far have remained cordial. The fans have been great, Hill said. Just signing autographs. The Chiefs list him at wide receiver, and he wears No. 81 but he has experience running the ball and in the return game.(Hes) a good a football player, Chiefs special teams coordinator Dave Toub said. Im not surprised by (what he does), but the guys that are going against him are surprised by it. Because you can see it. They think they have an angle, and then all of a sudden -- bam -- they dont. Hes also got the ability to change speeds. Hell show you one speed and then all of a sudden he has another gear.Hill started his career at Garden City (Kan.) Community College before going on to Oklahoma State. While with the Cowboys, he amassed more than 1,800 total yards in his lone season. His 996 total return yards were second in Division I and included a 92-yard punt return vs. Oklahoma that eventually set up a monumental overtime win. Five days later, Hill found himself in jail.Hills contributions at West Alabama were more mundane, but the obvious speed, which helped him win a pair of medals running sprints in the 2012 World Junior Track and Field Championships, never went away.Peters, a first-round pick who recorded eight picks and returned two for touchdowns last year, entered the league with his own questions about his character only to become an immediate star. He offered some simple advice for Hill.Stay humble; stay hungry, Peters said. Because when the lights come on, you get to have a lot more fun. Hes a real energetic person, likes to dance and do all those things, so I just tell him to stay hungry and his times going to come.On the play in Tuesdays practice, Chiefs quarterback Alex Smith threw deep down the right sideline to find Hill a few steps behind Peters. Hill reeled in the catch and gave one excited fan a quick high-five in celebration.Peters told Hill: Good job, rookie. The Chiefs depth at wide receiver behind star Jeremy Maclin seems to be fluid entering the first preseason game. Frankie Hammond and Albert Wilson have a lot of experience, although Wilson missed practice Wednesday. In addition, the Chiefs added intriguing free agent veterans Mike Williams and Rod Streeter.Ive always been told, `Act like youve been there before, Hill said, so its just another moment in my life. Just make a play. When its your turn, just make a play. The opportunity to just be a rookie in training camp doesnt seem lost on Hill at this point. He knows he needs to stay on track in his personal life and see if his talent can continue to shine beyond practice. To me, it still doesnt mean nothing, Hill said. Im just like everybody else. Ive got to get better each and every day. Thats my biggest thing: just staying focused, staying in the playbook, listening to the vets and doing what the coaches tell me to do.---Online:AP NFL website: www.pro32.ap.org and www.twitter.com/AP-NFL Discount Air Max 90 . -- Derrick Rose shook off poor shooting early to hit clutch shots late and Carlos Boozer had 20 points and 13 rebounds to lead the Chicago Bulls to a 104-95 preseason victory over the Oklahoma City Thunder on Wednesday night. Its been an injury-plagued season for Datsyuk, who has suited up for just 39 games. http://www.airmax90cheap.us/ . -- The Missouri Tigers might not have a roster full of superstars. The Vancouver coach and an announced sellout crowd of 18,910 watched in dismay as the Canucks lost 7-4 to the New York Islanders on Monday night by squandering a 3-0 lead in the third period. Air Max 90 China . But what about the officials? Every sport has officials and they also have stories about hard work and sacrifice but their accomplishments are seldom recognized by anyone outside their inner circle. CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- North Carolina coach Larry Fedora sees his team making plenty of mistakes, even after a pair of last-second wins that vaulted the 17th-ranked Tar Heels back into the national rankings .Hes trying to figure out how to fix them entering Saturdays game against No. 25 Virginia Tech.If we can ever get that accomplished, you would see some fireworks out there, he said. It would be pretty dang good. And thats the potential of this football team.Thats the balance for Fedora. His Tar Heels (4-1, 2-0 Atlantic Coast Conference) sit atop the leagues Coastal Division after rallying to beat Pittsburgh and then-No. 12 Florida State with scores in the last 5 seconds each time. But UNC is still spotty on defense, while the offense that has the potential to sprint past anyone still has moments that Fedora wants to clean up.Against the Seminoles, for example, it was Elijah Hoods fumble near the FSU goal line. Fedora said there was some gloom when coaches reviewed film of a thrilling win.Everybody knows you cant keep living on the edge like that, Fedora said. The Hokies (3-1, 1-0) are coming off a bye week and bring a tough defense to face UNCs rolling offense. Virginia Techs offense, a faster-tempo scheme brought by new coach Justin Fuente from Memphis, has been particularly sharp in the last two games, rolling to 103 points in lopsided home wins against Boston College and East Carolina.Virginia Tech is making its first appearance in the AP Top 25 this season, setting up the first game between two ranked teams at UNCs Kenan Stadium since 2008.Its great for our fans to take pride in and get excited about, Fuente said. It may add to more fanfare on the outside about the upcoming games, but its not something that we draw a lot of focus on.---Here are things to know about Saturdays Virginia Tech-North Carolina game:STOPPING THE PASS: UNC quarterback Mitch Trubisky has three straight 400-yard passing games and is yet to throw an interception this year. Meanwhile, receiiver Ryan Switzer enters with a two-game ACC record of 30 catches in the Pitt and FSU wins, prompting Trubisky to say that it sometimes seems its just me and him out there playing catch.dddddddddddd But the Hokies defense led by longtime coordinator Bud Foster ranks ninth nationally by allowing 264.3 yards per game and 10th against the pass.HOKIES ATTACK: Virginia Techs offense is taking shape. The Hokies have scored at least 36 points in every game, the outlier coming when they lost five fumbles in a 45-24 loss to Tennessee. Junior college transfer Jerod Evans has started all four games, throwing for 13 touchdowns with just one interception.DEFENSIVE CONCERNS: The Tar Heels are still up and down on defense. They struggled for three quarters against Pitt before coming up with two straight three-and-outs in the fourth quarter to set up the comeback win, then held FSU to 14 points through the first three quarters before giving up 21 in the final quarter. The players know it, and we are very adamant about getting those (mistakes) cleaned up, defensive coordinator Gene Chizik said. Its about time we do it, right?TELLING STRETCH: The Tar Heels are seeking to become the first repeat Coastal champion since the Hokies did it from 2010-11. This will be the third game in a critical four-week stretch that could put them in control of that race, assuming they can win Saturday and then again at No. 10 Miami next week.WEATHER CONCERNS: Hurricane Matthew has been moving north since early in the week. That could affect game conditions with wind and rain, depending on the course the storm takes as it continues its trek into Friday evening.---AP Sports Writer Hank Kurz in Richmond, Virginia, contributed to this report.---Follow Aaron Beard on Twitter at http://www.twitter.com/aaronbeardap and the APs college football site at http://collegefootball.ap.org ' ' '
