BOSTON -- Boston ace Clay Buchholz could easily joke about his fielding night with the start hes off to this season. David Ortiz rebounded from a rough first game with a long two-run homer and drove in three runs to help Buchholz improve to 9-0, earning the Red Sox a split of a day-night doubleheader with a 7-2 win over the Los Angeles Angels on Saturday night. Buchholz gave up two runs on six hits, striking out four and walking one over 6 2-3 innings to match Arizonas Patrick Corbin (9-0) as the majors only unbeaten pitcher with at least nine wins, but he left in the seventh with what the team called "neck tightness." It was quite a fielding night for Bostons ace. Howie Kendrick hit a hard grounder off Buchholzs glove in the sixth. It bounced behind the mound and he dropped his glove and raced toward the ball, but Kendrick beat it out. "I think that ball knocked my glove off," he said, adding that when he spun and threw to first he irritated his neck. "It was a little nagging for a couple of innings, right after that ball hit off my glove and I threw to first, it bothered me." Buchholz had another adventure fielding a grounder. In the fourth, Alberto Callaspo hit a high chop toward first, the pitcher got under it, but misplayed it before grabbing it and, while lying on the ground, reached to tag Callaspo before he reached the bag. "I told Salty (catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia) it was the most un-athletic, athletic play Ive ever made," he said. Boston manager John Farrell didnt think the neck problem was anything serious. Buchholz didnt either. Buchholz missed a start last month with an irritation in his collarbone area. The victory snapped Bostons nine-game losing streak against Los Angeles. "We played a good game the first game and this game we didnt do what we needed to do," Los Angeles manager Mike Scioscia said. "I dont know about feeling satisfied. You want to pour your heart into every game and when you dont win, youre disappointed." Ortiz went 0 for 5, struck out twice and stranded six runners in the Red Sox 9-5 loss in the opener. In the first game, Mark Trumbo and Erick Aybar each drove in two runs as the Angels beat the Red Sox for their team-record sixth straight win at Fenway Park. With Boston leading the nightcap 4-2 in the sixth, Dustin Pedroia had an RBI single off reliever Jerome Williams before Ortiz hit a deep homer into the right-field seats, about 20 rows up into the corner. He stood and admired the balls flight before slowly rounding the bases. The Red Sox jumped ahead 2-0 against C.J. Wilson (4-5) with two runs in the first on consecutive RBI doubles by Jonny Gomes and Pedroia. Ortizs RBI double made it 3-0 in the second. After Mike Trouts run-scoring single cut it to 3-1, Boston added an unearned run in the fifth on David Ross RBI single after Mike Napoli reached on an infield hit and advanced on the same play when third baseman Callaspo bounced the throw past first for an error. Wilson gave up four runs -- three earned -- on eight hits, walking three and striking out five in five innings. In the opener, Tommy Hanson (3-2) allowed two runs in five innings for the win, striking out Ortiz twice and getting him to ground out weakly with two runners on in all three at-bats. "The first at-bat he didnt look very good on the breaking ball. I felt like I threw him a really good one," Hanson said. "Same with the second at-bat. That third time around with the tying run on third, Id rather face Ortiz in that situation than Pedroia, who hit two line drives on me. I threw him a first-pitch slider and he grounded out, which worked out for me." The Angels built a big lead when reliever Franklin Morales walked three straight batters and allowed four runs in the seventh inning, making it 7-2. "I felt like it was an opportunity to get him some work in advance of a potential spot start next week," Farrell said. "Then, obviously, we saw what happened in the seventh inning -- lost the strike zone as we got deeper into (the inning) and that ended up being the difference in todays game." Trout added a pair of doubles high off the Green Monster and collected three hits for the Angels. The Angels went 6-0 overall against the Red Sox last season. Los Angeles won its ninth consecutive game against Boston in the clubs first meeting this year. The game was a makeup from Friday nights rainout. Mike Carp had a solo homer, three hits and drove in two runs for Boston. Daniel Nava added three hits. Felix Doubront (4-3) gave up three runs and six hits over six innings. The Red Sox stranded eight runners in the first four innings-- two in each -- and 14 overall. Boston made it closer by scoring three runs with two outs in the ninth. Ernesto Frieri struck out Jacoby Ellsbury with runners on first and third for his 14th save. Los Angeles held a 3-2 lead until Morales wildness in the seventh. Trumbo had an RBI double before the left-hander threw nine consecutive balls to end his appearance and force home the final two runs. Clayton Mortensen relieved and allowed Aybars infield hit that made it 7-2 before J.B. Shuck hit a flyball for his second out of the inning to end it. Having planned and saved soundly in the good times on a slower day one pitch, the hosts were able to absorb the shock of tougher batting conditions, helped by a Peter Handscomb stimulus package.Pakistan had no such safety net, and when the crash came under the Gabba lights against the wobbling pink ball, they went swiftly into free fall. The visiting batsmen jutted their bats out at the bad real estate offered by Australias canny bowlers like so many reckless traders, and were left observing the ruins of their first innings like former employees of Lehman Brothers. The main reason for the days violent swerve from 1 for 43 to 8 for 67 was the quickening of the surface, which clearly did not need a single millimetre more grass than the two the curator Kevin Mitchell Jnr. left on it. One wonders how swiftly the match might have moved with the 6mm preferred by Adelaides groundsman Damian Hough.Josh Hazlewood, Mitchell Starc and Jackson Bird had far too much speed, accuracy and movement for Pakistans batsmen, cowed as they already had been on slower, seamier pitches in New Zealand. Of the tourists only Sami Aslam gave any indication of permanence, and even that was of the painful, white-knuckle kind as he wore two blows on the helmet before glancing Bird into Matthew Wades gloves.Handscombs chanceless century, in only his second Test, ensured that the quality spells bowled by Mohammad Amir and Wahab Riaz did not result in a similar level of mayhem. Amirs figures were his best since returning to the Pakistan side, but he was unable to dislodge Handscomb, who showed patience beyond his years and deep trust in his way of batting. Gleefully, he leapt from 91 to 101 with a powerful six off Yasir Shah then a delectable square drive off Amir. Bird and Nathan Lyon bolstered Australias total with a pesky stand of 49 - runs measured in value through the deepening furrow in Misbah-ul-Haqs brow.Steven Smith and Handscomb had begun intent on a long occupation, but the captain appeared to decide it was time to go on the attack after the fourth wicket stand went beyond 170 runs. First he tried to deposit Yasir into the Gabba stands only for Amir to drop a swirling chhance, then flayed at Wahab to end an equal parts fine and fortunate innings.ddddddddddddNic Maddinson was not confronted by floodlights and a swinging ball, but the extra pace off the pitch did appear to trouble him against both spin and pace before he was unable to withdraw his bat from Wahab in time - having already been turfed at short leg off Yasir. Wade and Starc both offered up catches to the slips off the persistent Amir before Handscomb was able to reach three figures, doing so with an exultant yell and matching fist pump.Despite the late flurry from Bird and Lyon, Pakistans openers did have the advantage of starting in daylight. Starc gained some early swing, but it was a ball angled across with bounce that found the edge of Azhar Alis bat - expertly snaffled by Usman Khawaja. For a little more than 15 overs, the resolute Sami and a seemingly composed Babar Azam held the Australians at bay, even as the lights took effect. It was clear they stuck around longer than the hosts preferred, as evidenced by Starcs ever more prominent snarling in Samis direction. But it was to be Hazlewood who signalled the start of the downturn by tempting Babar with a delivery just wide enough to drive, and just short enough to make it risky. The resultant edge was well held by Smith, turning his body, and next ball Wade had a far simpler task to collect a thinner edge from a fencing Younis Khan.Though Misbah survived the hat-trick, he seemed mesmerised by the bouncing, seaming ball, and it was no surprise when his searching bat succeeded only in edging low to Matt Renshaw at first slip. By now the Gabba had taken on full Colosseum mode, as near enough to 25,000 spectators willed further edges into the Australian cordon. They got them too, as Asad Shafiq and Yasir offered further catches to Khawaja, either side of a return catch from Wahab and a forlorn touch down the leg side by Sami. His determination to keep his bat from harm had been the closest any Pakistani came to a workable method in such bouncy conditions.Late in the piece, Sarfraz Ahmed and Amir managed to hang around until stumps while inching the total towards three figures - the former was reprieved when Wade failed to glove a stumping chance off Lyon. If Pakistan look about as healthy as numerous major economies did in late 2008 there is one troubling divergence from that tale: the Gabba doesnt tend to do bail-outs. ' ' '
