MIAMI -- On the verge of a second successive series sweep, the Cincinnati Reds encountered a ninth-inning blip. First Mat Latos gave up a triple, ending his bid for a complete game. Then closer Aroldis Chapman gave up another triple, sending the game into extra innings. But the Reds bounced back in the 10th, scoring three times to complete their second three-game sweep in a row by beating the Miami Marlins 5-3 Thursday night. NL RBI leader Brandon Phillips homered in the sixth inning and drove in the go-ahead run with a sacrifice fly in the 10th. "We wanted to win the game in nine," Phillips said. "We could have just put our heads down, but we went with the flow." Latos and two relievers combined on a six-hitter. After Chapman (3-1) blew a save for the first time in nine chances, J.J. Hoover gave up a run in the 10th but earned his third save. Pinch-hitter Donald Lutz led off the 10th with a single against Steve Cishek (1-4). Following a walk, a bunt and an intentional walk, Phillips lifted a flyball for his second RBI of the night and 36th of the season. Jay Bruce followed with a two-run double and finished with three RBIs. The Marlins trailed 2-1 when Adeiny Hechavarria tripled with one out in the ninth, ending Latos night. "I really wanted to finish it," Latos said. "But we got a W, and thats all that matters." Chapman came on to strike out pinch-hitter Placido Polanco on a 100 mph fastball, but rookie Marcell Ozuna connected with a 98 mph fastball for an RBI triple. Chapman then struck out pinch-hitter Justin Ruggiano to send the game into extra innings. "We thought we were out of it. Then they tied the game up," Reds manager Dusty Baker said. "Youve got to come back and keep fighting. You have no choice." Juan Pierre led off Miamis first with his first homer since June 23. Latos dominated after that, throwing only 91 pitches in 8 1-3 innings. The right-handers streak of wins in four consecutive starts ended even though he allowed just four hits and two runs. "Latos was dealing," Baker said. "Thats as pitch-efficient as Ive seen anybody." The young Marlins, who have the NLs worst record, lost their fifth consecutive game and were swept for the fourth time this year. They rank last in the majors in runs and totalled five in the series. "I was trying to throw the ball right down the middle," Latos said. "Its a big ballpark, and I tried to let those guys get themselves out. A lot of them swing early and often." Miami rookie Jose Fernandez allowed two runs in seven innings and threw a career-high 99 pitches. The Marlins have scored 23 runs in his eight starts. The Reds swept a series in Miami for the first time since 2004. Theyve won a season-best six in a row to climb nine games above .500 for the first time. Latos preserved a 2-1 lead when he pitched out of a bases-loaded, one-out jam in the seventh. Jeff Mathis, playing in his first game this year after coming off the disabled list, bounced into a 5-2-3 double play. "Im happy with the way we battled," manager Mike Redmond said. "We used almost all our guys, we bunted, we tried everything to score some runs and still we came up short." The game was the finale this season between the two teams. Cincinnati went 6-1 against the Marlins, outscoring them 40-16. The Marlins fell to 0-11 with the retractable roof open in their ballpark. Theyre 5-3 with the roof closed. Pierre began the game with a slugging percentage of .278, but he needed only one swing in the first to put Miami ahead. He let out a whoop when his homer barely cleared the fence just inside the right field foul pole. "Juan Pierre hit a home run off me -- just my luck," Latos said. "I looked at him when he was running the bases and said, What the heck happened?" Pierre also robbed the Reds of two extra-base hits in left field. He made a diving catch of Joey Vottos drive to the warning track in the first, and made a diving, backhanded grab of Todd Fraziers fly in the sixth. Cincinnati made it 1-all in the fourth when Bruces two-out single scored Votto, who had doubled. Phillips sent a 95-mph fastball over the fence with two out in the sixth to put the Reds up 2-1. DETROIT -- Neither Danny Duffy nor his manager was giving much thought to the possibility of a no-hitter on Friday. The left-hander, who is 14 months removed from elbow surgery, was actually happy to finally give up a hit against the Tigers. Duffy (1-0) took a no-hitter into the sixth inning and beat Justin Verlander and Detroit 2-1 on a combined two-hitter in the first game of a day-night doubleheader. Duffy was called up from Triple-A Omaha to make his second big league start of the season, and didnt allow a hit until Miguel Cabreras hard-hit, two out single in the sixth. "I was glad that they finally got one, honestly, because I just wanted to pitch," said Duffy, who underwent Tommy John surgery. "I wanted to protect this arm." Manager Ned Yost wasnt about to push his pitcher. "Even if he didnt give up a hit in the sixth, that was probably going to be his last inning anyway, because we had him for 100 pitches (he threw 96)," Yost said. "He didnt have the pitches for the seventh, eighth and ninth innings. "We just wanted five innings out of him and he gave us one more than we expected." Kelvin Herrera replaced Duff in the seventh and retired the side in order. Aaron Crow worked the eighth and surrendered Santiagos pinch-hit home run leading off the inning. Crow got the next three batters. Greg Holland pitched the ninth for his 33rd save. Eric Hosmer homered for the Royals. Ramon Santiago hit a pinch hit home run for the Tigers. "Would have liked to have been able to accomplish two things, win and keep the bullpen fresh," Verlander. "Just didnt happen that way. Felt like I threw the ball well. Just their guys pitched extremely well, which is theyve done all year." He allowed two runs on seven hits in eight innings. He struck out five and didnt walk a batter. Verlander gave up Hosmers 13th home run of the season, leading off the fourth, which gave the Royals a 1-0 lead. The left-handed hitting first baseman ddrilled Verlanders pitch to the opposite field and into the left-field stands beyond the Tigers bullpen.dddddddddddd "Just trying to stay to the middle and not pull off anything," Hosmer said. Verlander said Hosmer took advantage of a hanging curve. "Yeah, it was a hanger. You dont see hanging curveballs hit the opposite field too often though. That was impressive," he said. "It wasnt like it was a question about it getting out. I didnt even watch it. Strong kid." Kansas City made it 2-0 on consecutive doubles leading off the seventh by Justin Maxwell and Bonifacio. Phil Coke and Al Alburquerque pitched the ninth for Detroit, combining to retire the Royals 1-2-3. NOTE: Tigers manager Jim Leyland said it was likely that neither closer Joaquin Benoit nor late-inning reliever Bruce Rondon would be available for either games of Fridays games because of how often theyve been used in the past few games. . Royals manager Ned Yost said third baseman Mike Moustakas, who has been out since leaving Mondays game with a tight calf, would do some work on the field on Friday to assess his progress. . Tigers regular DH Victor Martinez and first baseman Prince Fielder switched places for the first game. Fielder served as the DH and Martinez played first. . Detroit shortstop Jose Iglesias, as he squared to attempt a bunt, was hit in the groin area by a Danny Duffy pitch leading off the third inning. Iglesias hobbled toward first base before collapsing in foul territory. He remained in the game after being attended to by trainer Kevin Rand and after he recovered. . The Royals Billy Butler continued his mastery of Verlander. Butler was 2-for-3 to run his career mark against the Tigers star to 27-for-62 (. 435). . The scheduled starters for Fridays night portion of the doubleheader are James Shields (7-8, 3.33) for Kansas City against rookie lefthander Jose Alvarez (1-2, 5.03), who was called up from Triple-A Toledo to make the start in the twin bill.
