AVONDALE, Ariz. - Chase Elliott became the youngest champion in NASCAR history on Saturday when he wrapped up the Nationwide Series title at Phoenix International Raceway. The 18-year-old rookie is the youngest driver to win a title in any of NASCARs three national series. He broke the mark set by Brian Vickers, who was 20 when he won the Nationwide title in 2003.Elliott, the son of Hall of Fame inductee and 1988 NASCAR champion Bill Elliott, clinched the title with his fifth-place finish at Phoenix. It moved him 52 points ahead of teammate Regan Smith with only next weeks season-ending race remaining.A high school graduate in May — his mother made him juggle school with his budding racing career — Elliott wasnt even sure hed be racing this time last year. He had no prospects for a full-time ride in any of NASCARs top series, and his deal to drive a Nationwide car for JR Motorsports didnt come together until January,This race a year ago, we had no plans of racing Nationwide this season and was uncertain what our future was going to be, Elliott said. It truly has been a dream come true for me to even be competing this season.Elliotts official celebration will have to wait until next weeks season finale at Homestead-Miami Speedway, but he was greeted near the finish line by his parents and the family proudly posed for photos. They said just enjoy it, Elliott said of his parents. This certainly has not set in for me, by any means. I am going to enjoy every bit of it until the green flag at Daytona (in February). This is a dream come true for me.The Elliotts become the fifth father/son duo to win NASCAR national series championships. The others are Lee Petty and Richard Petty, Ned Jarrett and Dale Jarrett, David Pearson and Larry Pearson, and Dale Earnhardt and Dale Earnhardt Jr.But this title also made Dale Earnhardt Jr. a champion car owner — something his late father accomplished when Earnhardt Jr. won Nationwide titles in 1998 and 1999 driving for his dad. The championship for JR Motorsports was the first for the organization, which is owned by Earnhardt Jr., his sister, Kelley, and Rick Hendrick. It comes in a season of turnaround for JRM, which has entered full-time entries in the Nationwide Series since 2006 but won just 12 races in its first eight seasons. JRM has nine victories this year, three by Elliott.Brad Keselowski won the race with a pass of Kyle Busch following a restart on the two-lap overtime sprint to the finish. Busch led 187 of the 206 laps but was denied the victory because Keselowski was given the final chance to catch him after a caution with one lap remaining in regulation. It was kind of a shame, he had the race won but the yellow came out, said Keselowski. I could understand if he was upset about that.Busch questioned the need for the caution — it was because Alex Bowman ran out of gas on the track — and wondered if it was thrown to prevent him from winning his eighth win of the season. Its pretty pathetic NASCAR throws these Kyle Busch cautions, its really getting old and aggravating for us in this Nationwide Series, Busch said. Its their prerogative, its their series and they get to do what they want to and I just have to settle for second and miss our opportunity on another owners championship this year.Elliott Sadler was third, followed by Ty Dillon, Elliott and Erik Jones. It was Keselowskis 32nd career Nationwide victory and fifth of the season. The Team Penske entry driven by Keselowski goes into the finale with a 29-point lead over Joe Gibbs Racing in the race for the owners championship. Note: The Calgary Flames announced Tuesday that Sean Monahan would not be made available to Canadas World Junior team. In a perfect world, Team Canada head coach Brent Sutter would be bringing every eligible NHL player with him to Malmo, Sweden as part of his squad at the 2014 World Junior Hockey Championship, but thats not where we reside. As it stands, theres the distinct possibility that Minnesota Wild defenceman Mathew Dumba will be the only NHL roster player going. Nathan MacKinnon isnt about to be excused from the high-flying Colorado Avalanche and the Washington Capitals arent about to divest themselves of rugged forward Tom Wilson, but the final two names on that last are intriguing options - defenceman Morgan Rielly of the Toronto Maple Leafs and Calgary Flames forward Sean Monahan. While the signs seem to indicate that neither will be released, both would provide some NHL-calibre experience (well, as veteran as a 19-year-old can be) to a team short on returning players from last years roster and experienced with such a high level of play. Only Jonathan Drouin, Griffin Reinhart, Jake Paterson and Charles Hudon are back - and Hudon actually missed the tournament because of injury. But which of the pair does Canada need more and which is more likely available? On Monday, Maple Leafs coach Randy Carlyle called loaning out Rielly, "counterproductive" to his development and director of hockey operations Dave Poulin told the Toronto Sun that the team viewed Rielly as a core piece moving forward this season. "Id say hes a big part of this group right here, right now and we dont see that changing at this point," Poulin said on Friday. "Thats the way were looking at it." That said, Hockey Canada has stated that the Leafs have not officially ruled out loaning out Rielly. Riellys transition to the pro game hasnt been without its rookie year bumps.dddddddddddd Hes been a healthy scratch six times in 27 games this season and has struggled in his own end at times, especially while partnered with Cody Franson. While the Leafs defence was been far from strong, they do have a surplus of blueliners and the team could easily make do without Rielly (who had a goal and two assists in six games at last years WJHC) from two weeks. The former Moose Jaw Warriors confident puck-handling and passing, as well as his shot from the point, could make him the ideal candidate to quarterback the power play for Brent Sutters team. The potential inclusion of Monahan is a more complicated proposition. Last week, the first-year forward was placed on injured reserve by the Flames with a cracked bone in his foot. Hes currently listed as week-to-week. Now, this injury might conclude any discussion of Jay Feaster loaning out Monahan, but if the timeframe on his injury is accurate, it wouldnt preclude his participation. But the fear of his injury recurring while away from his NHL club could be a concern. Monahan has inarguably been a more central figure to the Flames this season than Rielly has to the Leafs. On a team needing offence, Monahan sits second on the Flames in both goals (nine) and points (15.) The fact that the former Ottawa 67 is so important to the teams 22nd-ranked offence means that his absence would be greatly felt. But there is a flipside to the injury. If the Flames can do more than tread water during his absence and find scoring from elsewhere, then theres a chance that Bob Hartleys club would feel more confident about allowing the Brampton, Ontario native to head to Malmo. With no MacKinnon, Monahan could be a fine replacement to centre a line with Drouin. Yes, the chances of either Rielly or Monahan suited up for Canada are slim, but which of the two would make the bigger impact? As always, its Your! Call. ' ' '
