SAN DIEGO -- Everth Cabreras sacrifice fly in the fifth inning scored the games only run, and the San Diego Padres topped the Cincinnati Reds 1-0 on Monday night despite managing just one hit. Tommy Medicas single in the second was the only hit for the Padres, who got solid pitching behind rookie Jesse Hahn (4-1) and four relievers to end Cincinnatis season-high five-game winning streak. Huston Street pitched the ninth for his 22nd save in as many chances for the Padres, who won for the second time this season after getting just one hit. They defeated Pittsburgh 3-2 on June 4, with Cabreras bunt single being the lone hit. Mat Latos (1-1) allowed one run, a hit and a walk over seven innings in absorbing the tough-luck loss against his former team. He struck out four. The Padres broke the scoreless tie in the fifth without the benefit of hit as Cabrera drove in Medica, who walked to open the inning and then stole the first base of his career. He took third when Cameron Maybin flied to centre, then scored on Cabreras deep fly to centre. Leaning on his slow curveball, Hahn struck out five straight batters in the first four innings and set his career high of nine through five innings. Over one stretch of 10 Reds put outs, nine were strikeouts. Hahn, who threw 97 pitches, didnt allow a run, with three hits and two walks in five innings. The Reds had the tying run in scoring position in the seventh inning when Devin Mesoraco doubled with one out to left-centre. Ryan Ludwick flied out to right, then Carlos Quentin made a sliding catch on his knees on Zack Cozarts fly ball to end the threat. In the eighth inning, pinch-hitter Skip Schumaker flied deep to centre with Maybin making the catch while crashing into the wall. The Reds loaded the bases with two outs in the second inning when Hahn hit Mesoraco, allowed a single by Ludwick and walked Cozart. But Latos struck out to end the inning. The Padres had only three baserunners in the game. Medica singled and advanced to second base on a wild pitch in the second inning, but was stranded when Maybin lined out and Cabrera flied out. Cabrera was left on base after a one-out walk in the eighth. NOTES: The Padres interviewed Logan White for their vacant general manager position. Chan captured two silver medals at last months Sochi Winter Games — mens singles and the inaugural team event. But he doesnt have the urge to resume training to defend his world title when the event is held in Saitama, Japan, later this month.WINNIPEG - Ondrej Pavelec and Michael Hutchinson know how to share. The Winnipeg Jets goaltenders have been rotating starts for the past 12 games, and there are no plans right now to end the two-starter approach. After the teams optional skate on Monday, head coach Paul Maurice said the pattern will continue with Hutchinsons turn to start when the Jets visit Chicago for a game against the Blackhawks on Tuesday. Its not a common practice in the National Hockey League to rotate goalies, and its perhaps less likely in this situation because Hutchinson is a rookie.Youd think the veteran Pavelec would have his nose out of joint, but he said thats not the case. For me, its not a competition at all, said Pavelec, whose NHL resume features more than 300 games. Its just get yourself ready for a game and thats all that you can control. Hutch is a really good guy. Were having fun.And the team (17-10-7) is having success with the duo.During the 12-game rotation, Hutchinson is 4-1-1 and Pavelec 3-0-3. The veteran was in net for a 4-3 overtime loss to Philadelphia on Sunday.Overall this season, Hutchinson is 7-2-2. The native of Barrie, Ont., has stopped 281 of the 299 shots hes faced for a league-leading 1.73 goals against average and .940 save percentage.Pavelec is 10-8-5. Hes faced 642 shots and turned aside 586 for a 2.34 GAA and .913 save percentage.I definitely didnt think my first season would be going as well as it has, but at the same time, I didnt really come in with any expectations, said Hutchinson, 24.Its just been a fun season and Im just enjoying every moment.Pavelec, 27, also recognizes Hutchinsons talents. He doesnt play as a rookie at all, he said. The first year its exciting, its something different. The second year is always harder, but the way hes playing I think its not going to be any different the next year or the year after. Its his rookie year and he enjoys playing well. Hes really excited about playing. I think its a pretty good story that a guy who played in the (ECHL) last year makes the NHL and plays unbelievable.Hutchinson played last season for the Ontario Reign of the ECHL and then led the American Hockey Leagues St. Johns IceCaps through to a loss to Texas in the Calder Cup final.ddddddddddddHe also got into three games with the Jets and had two victories, one against the Boston Bruins who drafted him in 2008 and later let him go.Hutchinson said his only goal this season was to make the Jets roster.Hes proud of how hes performing, and thankful Pavelec has been supportive.Ondrej and I get along great, he said. We both realize its a team sport.Obviously, every goalie wants to be playing games, but you know from a young age thats not that the case. Theres always two goalies on a team.Right now, weve been winning games during a little bit of a rotation so thats the only thing that matters. It doesnt matter who plays. When hes in the net, I want the team to win just as much as they do when Im playing, so its been working out well.Pavelec noted he had good goaltending partners such as Chris Mason and Johan Hedberg when the franchise was in Atlanta and its good he and Hutchinson enjoy each others company.Maurice said the duo has made his game planning a bit easier. When you have two guys that have played exceptionally well, you cant make a wrong call on whoever goes in, he said.Hell make a change when he needs to, but so far that time hasnt come.I didnt start out this saying Im going to roll the goalies this month, Maurice said. It started with Mikes game got to the point that he deserved to be in and so did Pav.And it just seemed the right thing to do was put the guy who had a real good game last in next. And you look back, there was always a good game in behind so they deserved to be in a rotation. The rotation actually helps during busy stretches and thats one of the reasons Pavelec doesnt mind sharing time in the crease.Youve got that day off to mentally prepare for the next one and sometimes its not a bad thing, Pavelec said. But at the same time, I dont know any goalie who likes to be on the bench, right? Probably other goalies feel the same thing, but its worked out pretty well for us and worked pretty well for the team.Well see. At the end of the day its always the coachs decision whos going to be in the net. Your job as a goalie is to be ready to go in no matter what. ' ' '
